Hustling In A Hard Industry by Melly Myers
)
Mellys first opportunity on TV was when she was scouted at the North London Performing Arts Centre showcase, where she was offered representation. Her first brief onscreen experience was opposite James Nesbit on Murphys Law, and shortly after that Melly's first 2 biggest roles with dialogue was for BBCs Crimewatch reconstruction and Planet Cook. Since her younger years, the industry has changed a lot. "I took a break at 19 and came back in my 30's to find the industry had completely changed. Years ago, there were no showreels. You had 1 black and white photo headshot and just your Spotlight! Self tapes were to unheard of, and so now the industry has become alot more challenging. Before you could take 2 on direction in the room, develop in person relationships. Now you rely heavily on digital materials".
Although Melly misses the old fashioned way of things, she does believe there are many benefits to how our industry has changed. "The good news is I can tape from anywhere. I can do it as many times as I want perfecting it. I also further my reach as I send my spotlight link out daily to casting directors. I don't leave everything to my agent I'm always hustling! That's emails, IG dms, you have to scream and shout when your in this business as its tough!"
Melly has also recalled how platforms like V Show Cards ran by her good friend Darren is a great platform to get involved in. "Thanks to Darren we have worked on some fantastic independent projects together. When he hears of a role I suit, he will reccomend me and I do the same for him! "
Although a rewarding industry Melly has some tips for anyone wanting to start out. "Never get into this business for the fame and money. Reality TV is better suited for that. You have to really love what you do to be in this to win it. Prepare for lots of people rejecting you and ignoring you daily. It's not for the faint hearted! Don't be a Diva, give gratitude for every audition. Be humble and kind to everyone you meet, and if an Actor helps you return the favour! And most importantly, don't be shy to put yourself out there. Get out of your comfort zone - casting workshops, perform for good showcase at Actors Pro Expo. If you truly believe this is what your meant to be doing, scream and shout about it every day"
